WHAT DO I DO WITH THIS DISK?

1. Copy the disk contents to the hard drive of a computer to make a working copy. Safely store the original disk as a permanent backup copy.

2. Copy the HIGH SCHOOL PREP (HSP) program from the hard drive to as many disks as you need for each of the Senior and Jr. ROTC units you support. It takes only a couple of minutes to copy the disk. (20 schools = less than an hour for 20 copies.)

3. In MS Word make at least one paper copy of the information from the hard drive. I recommend a 600 dpi laser printer be used, but often beggars can't be choosy and you may have to use a 300 dpi laser printer. This will take a little over an hour. If you do not have the capability to do this, take the diskette to one of the schools you support and ask the ROTC personnel to do it for you.

4. Once you have a paper copy to show the school personnel, you must make a decision. You may take the HSP program directly to ROTC, or you may take it to the school administration (with an ROTC instructor present).

--ROTC--The instructors may: 1) use the HSP course for a complete first-year program, or 2) the instructors may use any of the individual lessons to incorporate within their current leadership course.

--School Administration--Several schools are already teaching HSP as a mandatory course to the entire 9th grade class. It is taught by ROTC personnel in uniform and usually requires one extra instructor. The course also has been used to increase the number of students in a JROTC unit. This has special value if the unit is on probation.

5. Does High School Prep work? Mr. Daniel Nicholson, the team chief of the Surrattsville High School, Clinton, MD, Middle States Evaluation, an intensive evaluation occurring every 10 years, stated, "In 27 years of evaluating more than 40 high schools I have never witnessed a program bringing so much to a school as High School Prep and AFJROTC." His conclusion was based on an extensive evaluation of students, faculty, and administration. This analysis had extra meaning since only 42% of the HSP budget had been procured, and many goals remained un-attempted because the time of the evaluation occurred during the first 90 days of the program's inception.

Subjective and objective analyses have shown that graduates of HSP had less absences from school, had higher grades, and were more polite than students who did not take the course. High School Prep graduates stated the program was the only organized effort in the school for first year students. The course resulted in the freshman class becoming a "TEAM."

6. I highly recommend PowerSurge Videos to use in conjunction with this curriculum when teaching High School Prep. The films are relatively expensive, but worth every penny. School districts may have to approve the films for showing in their districts. Teachers in some districts must have special training to present material in the areas of birth control and sex education. Information for purchase of the films follows:
