LETTER TO PARENTS

SUBJECT: High School Prep Course at Surrattsville High School

l. For the first time, Surrattsville High School will offer an Aerospace Science program beginning August 1994. All 9th grade students at Surrattsville High will be enrolled in Aerospace Science. Of the total students, some will enroll voluntarily as cadets in Air Force Junior Reserve Officers Training Corps (AFJROTC), and others will be enrolled in the High School Prep (HSP) classes, but they will not be cadets. All 9th grade students, however, will be taught the HSP curriculum by AFJROTC instructors. Military training (drill and military academics) and military uniforms will be available only to AFJROTC cadets. However, all HSP students may participate in AFJROTC events, such as field trips, social events, and sports if they so elect.

2. Currently, there is a critical need for a learning environment that emphasizes the development of a student's attitude and self-awareness to foster success. The HSP class will provide the "how-to" techniques and actual opportunities for students to cultivate their own positive decision-making skills. This will assist students to make the most beneficial decisions for the future regarding their careers and education beyond high school. Success will be measured by the students demonstrating favorable gains in the areas of attendance, drop out rate, D/E (low grade) rate, and achievement and attitude in class.

3. The attached letter provides a detailed explanation of the course content designed to accomplish the above objectives. Should you have comments or ideas to enhance HSP, I will be pleased to discuss them with you at Back-To-School-Night on 22 September. I hope that you and the students are as excited about this extraordinary opportunity as I am.

ANTHONY L. EDLER

Lieutenant Colonel USAF (Ret)
